Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

I have lots of experience using Photoshop, as my father is a graphic designer, so the program was available to me from a very young age. This aided me in producing the panels for my productions, as well as the magazine advert for Elle Mary's EP. Photoshop allowed me to morph images together using the opacity tool, which was effective for my productions (panel 4 especially). The photographs taken from my dslr camera would have become distorted and pixilated if I changed the size in programs such as word. However, using Photoshop solved this as it has a tick setting that unpixilates the image, which proved to be highly useful for my magazine advert. To give my images a professional style, I used colour boosts and contrast effects within Photoshop. This made the raw image have more life and character.

I believe that Photoshop was the most useful piece of technology for my print productions, due to the vast amount it achieved in my work.

Q3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Q3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

MUSIC VIDEO

As I have stated previously on my planning and research section of my blog, my target audience is directed towards the British middle class, around the ages of 18-22. I do however believe that there has been an increase in age since releasing this on my social media pages, getting compliments from people up to the years of 30 and up. I felt that the video is almost gender-less, as the male character is the the main lead, yet shows weakness, and the female character is displayed as being a side character but with a stronger mental state then the male. However, the track from Elle Mary could favour more towards a female audience, due to the Mary's vocals being the most prominent. Although the male is not presented in a sexual fashion, he could be portrayed as an emotive performer that females could potentially desire, much like actor Evan Peters, who plays unsettling characters in popular TV series 'American Horror Story', yet has a female fan base.  Having the male as the main character does however fit with the common film noir structure, having the main lead as a male, therefore gaining a larger male demographic.

Evan Peters - American Horror Story

Male Character - Music Video

My younger audience would most likely enjoy artists such as Aurora, Ben Howard and Rhye because it has been seen as more sophisticated. I do feel however that my older audience would listen to more instrumentally progressive music such as the early discography of Elbow (The any day EP- The newborn EP). I believe this would be the case due to the younger generation picking up their music taste through the use of modern day media such as the radio, which mainly airs new releases.

I used questionnaires as my main form of feedback, having an equal number of males and females taking part. This allowed me to have a fair and even results, showing which gender preferred my music video. after my target audience viewed my video and  the results were collected, I discovered that my male demographic gave the production a higher grade than females. However, The females did give the best feedback, explaining that they enjoyed the cinematography, specific scenes such as the wall punching and bloodied hands, as well as common editing techniques used throughout. My male demographic on the other hand only used basic feedback on what they enjoyed in the video.

As you can see from these two questionnaires from my male audience, they viewed the video to be top marks, proving that my male demographic enjoys the style of the production. However, you can clearly see the feedback that it is quite minimal, only giving basic feedback on what they enjoyed and disliked in my production.

Two of the questionnaires i received showed quite mixed reviews of my music video. This allowed me to see how I could improve my work for the next production.

I drew up a table for my questionnaire results to show the ratings more clearly, allowing me to see which gender preferred my video in detail. As you can see, it is obvious that my male demographic enjoyed the video more than the females, four of them giving my production a five out of five. However, it was quite surprising to find out that three males gave the mise en scene, camerawork and enjoyment of the video three out of five.

PRINT PRODUCTIONS

Throughout my creation of my print productions, my teacher had given feedback on how she viewed them, allowing me to alter and transform the look of my work to fit with my specific target audience. Although my tutor does not fit my desired demographic, she has the knowledge I needed to aid me in a better outcome. For my magazine advert and panels, my teacher was very impressed with the work that I had achieved. the positive feedback allowed me to base my other productions in a similar fashion.

The more instructive feedback was also useful to me, as it allowed me to make major changes to my creations that helped me overall. This can be shown with my first draft of my panels, my tutor suggesting that the design would be acceptable for a well known artist, but the minimalist design would not sell for an up and coming performer. This feedback made me change the idea, creating another design that I feel made much more impact, standing out from the crowd and it being more fitting for my target audience. My second design's feedback was more in depth than the first, allowing me to make necessary changes to my work to relate to my target audience.

Q2: How effective is the combination of your media product with ancillary texts?

Jose Gonzalez, who I have mentioned previously, is a Swedish indie folk singer that I believe shares similar characteristics to Elle Mary's music, creating minimalist songs that are very vocal heavy. His single from his 2003 album 'Veneer' titled 'Heartbeats' is a great example of a digipak from this specific genre.
As you can see from the cover of Gonzalez's single, it is set out in a minimalist fashion, sporting a simple and readable sans serif font that is similar to the font I used for my panel one. The image is also quite minimalist, showing a section of the street and a bush outside of a building. Colourful plastic balls are falling from the sky however, creating a purpose for the shot and making it more interesting to look at. The graphics on this album cover suggest a world of enchantment and hope, whereas my cover is far more sinister in its approach to reach its audience.

Out of School Productions

I decided to share the productions that I have been creating out of school, as I have recently been working with many bands to produce videos for them.

Lobster Documentary: Alongside Tom Stanners and indie music blog PLUM, a short documentary was created for popular funk band 'Lobster' before their headline show at The Norwich Arts Centre.

Lobster Music Video: As well as this, Tom and I filmed the music video for Lobster during their headline show, experimenting with certain effects on Sony Vegas Pro to create an effective and original production.

Cabrakid Music Video: This time filming and editing solo, I had the privallige to film with local hip hop group 'Cabrakid', Shooting most of the footage with a wide angle fish eye lens. This was a fun one to do!

Poster Advert- Elle Mary & The Bad Men

For my promotional poster that I created for Elle Mary & The Bad Men's EP, I decided to go with a more minimalistic approach, using a picture that was taken on the recording day. I feel that the light shining through the cracks in the broken windows works brilliantly for the themes of the songs on the EP, due to their dark and depressing nature, but show signs of hope and freedom. Choosing a font to fit with the picture proved to be quite a struggle, although after a long time searching I decided to use 'Arcane Condensed' and set it into italics to give a more dignified look.
